Milestone Birthday Quiz: Questions for 30, 40, 50, 60

Question ideas and a round structure for a milestone birthday quiz at 30, 40, 50 or 60: childhood, the birth year, live questions and a photo finale.

A round birthday deserves something more personal than a playlist and a cake. A quiz about the birthday person gets friends, family and colleagues talking, mixing and competing. Below you will find a round structure that works for any milestone, plus question ideas for 30, 40, 50 and 60. We use Sophie as an example; replace her with your own birthday girl or boy.

A round structure for a birthday quiz

Plan 15 to 25 questions, which take about 45 to 60 minutes. Five rounds of three to five questions keep the pace up:

  1. 1Childhood: baby photos, school, the dream job at age seven.
  2. 2The birth year: music, films, prices and news from the year they were born.
  3. 3Ask Sophie: questions she answers live on stage while the teams guess her answer.
  4. 4Friends and stories: holidays, hobbies, legendary nights out.
  5. 5Finale: an estimate question and a photo reveal.

💡 Ask a few friends and family members for one or two facts each, well in advance. Add them as co-hosts, so they can put their questions in directly and the birthday person does not see anything.

Questions that work at any age

  • •Whose baby photo is this? (photo reveal)
  • •What did Sophie want to be when she was seven?
  • •What was the name of her first pet?
  • •Which subject did she like least at school?
  • •In which city or village did she grow up?
  • •What was her very first job?
  • •Estimate: how many candles have been on all of Sophie's birthday cakes together?
  • •Beach holiday or city trip? (Sophie answers live)
  • •What does Sophie always order at a restaurant?

Turning 30

At thirty, the best stories are from student days, first jobs and festivals. The birth-year round is about the late nineties or the turn of the century, depending on the year.

  • •In which city did Sophie study, and how many times did she move house?
  • •Which festival has she been to most often?
  • •What was her first car, if any?
  • •Which song did she play non-stop at eighteen?
  • •Estimate: how many countries has she visited?

Turning 40

At forty, many guests know the birthday person from different phases: school friends, colleagues, neighbours, family. Make sure every group has a question it can answer.

  • •Where did Sophie live when she was twenty-five?
  • •Which colleague has known her the longest?
  • •Which band was on the poster above her bed as a teenager?
  • •What is her famous party dish?
  • •Who will she call first if she gets a flat tyre? (Sophie answers live)

Turning 50

At fifty, nostalgia is your friend. Photos from the eighties and nineties, school trips, the first home. The birth-year round can include prices from back then, which always leads to disbelief.

  • •What did a cinema ticket cost in the year Sophie turned eighteen? (estimate, after checking the real price)
  • •Which hairstyle did she have in her school photo? (photo question with four options)
  • •Where did she go on her first holiday without her parents?
  • •Which sport did she play for years?
  • •Which advice would she give her twenty-year-old self? (Sophie answers live, the teams choose from four options)

Turning 60

At sixty, the guests span three or even four generations. Mix grandchildren and old friends in the teams, and lean on photos and estimate questions, which everyone can join in.

  • •Who is this young woman on the moped? (photo reveal)
  • •Which job did Sophie do longest?
  • •How many grandchildren does she have, and what are their names?
  • •What will she do first when she retires? (Sophie answers live)
  • •Estimate: how many kilometres has she cycled to work in her career?

The birth-year round: get the facts right

A round about the birth year is great for guests who do not know the birthday person well. Pick four or five questions: the number one hit in the week of the birth, a big film, a news event, the price of something everyday. Check every fact in a reliable source before you add it. The AI interview helps you write questions about the person from the facts you provide; for general facts about a year, look them up yourself.

Make it feel like a show

Choose one of five visual styles and an accent colour, and let the big screen do the rest: a marquee title, live answers, a drumroll from the soundboard and standings after each round. At the end, the podium rises with confetti and the winner fanfare. A music question with Sophie's favourite song? Play it yourself on Spotify or YouTube while the screen counts down; see our music round guide.

How many teams for a birthday quiz?+

Teams of three to six people work best. With twenty guests, plan four to six teams. One phone per team is enough.

Can the birthday person play along?+

They can join a team, but the live questions, where they answer on stage and the teams guess, usually work better.

Does it work at home?+

Yes. A laptop connected to the TV with an HDMI cable, internet and sound is all you need. Test it the day before.
