A pub quiz at home, with your living room as the TV studio

You do not need a pub for a good pub quiz. With PubquizTV, a laptop connected to your TV shows the questions, the answers coming in live, a drumroll and the standings, while everyone on the sofa plays in teams on their own phone. You host from your phone, with questions you wrote about the people in the room.

How a pub quiz at home works

  1. 1Make the quiz. Write your own questions, start from a template or let the AI interview turn your facts into questions. Add photos and a music round.
  2. 2Connect the laptop to the TV. An HDMI cable is usually all it takes. Sound comes through the TV or a speaker.
  3. 3Let everyone join. Teams scan the QR code on the TV with a phone. They play in the browser: no app, no account.
  4. 4Present from your phone. Start each question, reveal the answers, play a drumroll from the soundboard and show the standings. At the end the winners appear on a podium with fanfare and confetti.

It works for four people around the coffee table and for a full living room. One phone per team is enough, so grandparents can play along without touching a screen.

Ideas for a family quiz night, birthday or Christmas

  • •Family quiz night: old holiday photos, family recipes and “who said this at dinner?”. Our family quiz page has more ideas for mixing the generations.
  • •Birthday at home: a round about the birthday boy or girl, with questions they answer live on the sofa. See the birthday quiz for a full set-up.
  • •Christmas: a festive style, a round of Christmas songs you play yourself, and an estimate question about how many mince pies were eaten last year.
  • •New Year's Eve: a review of the year with photos from the group chat, ending just before midnight.
  • •A friends' night in: in-jokes, holiday memories and one general knowledge round to keep it fair.

💡 Playing with young children? Choose the playful “kids” style and add a photo round: little ones love shouting out who is on the picture.

A ready-made quiz pack or your own quiz?

You can also buy a printed or downloadable quiz pack for home. That is quick: you get finished questions, often with answer sheets, and someone reads them aloud. The questions are written for everyone, so they are about general knowledge rather than about your family or friends.

PubquizTV works differently. You make the questions yourself (with help from templates or the AI interview), so they are about the people in the room. And instead of pens and paper, the quiz runs like a TV show: answers on phones, scores calculated automatically, photos and music on the big screen and a podium at the end. It takes a little more preparation, and that preparation is exactly what makes it personal.

Tips for hosting in the living room

  • •Put the TV where everyone can see it and keep the lights a little dimmed: it instantly feels more like a show.
  • •Make teams of two to five, and mix ages so that every team has someone who knows the old stories.
  • •Run a practice round in advance: practice mode adds three automatic teams, so you can test everything on your own.
  • •Let a co-host help, for example to check answers or to run the soundboard.
  • •Plan about 45 to 60 minutes with a short break halfway. Our guide to hosting a party quiz helps with the running order.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need for a pub quiz at home?+

A laptop connected to your TV (usually with HDMI), internet, sound through the TV or a speaker, and one smartphone per team. Your own phone is the remote control.

Do my guests need an app?+

No. They scan the QR code on the TV and play in their phone's browser. No app, no account and no email address.

How many people can play?+

An unlocked party has room for up to 30 teams, and a team can be as big as you like. Teams of two to five work best in a living room.
